Saree

My first stopmotion animation, created in celebration of an everyday ritual that is often overlooked in society.

As a child I was often on the fringes of this ritual; getting in the way of both the person draping the saree and the person being draped. I was fascinated by the movements of the fabric and of the hands holding it. Such simple beauty can be found in way the people as components of this ceremony interact in an almost a dance-like fashion. The one person spins, the other moves their hands up and down the edging of the fabric and with a swish creates a perfect pleat, arms rise and fall and feet shuffle slowly left and right. I wanted to draw attention to this beauty in a format that was able to be easily consumed and with a medium that I many people are familiar with.
